Eagles top Vulcans on 2nd half goals

Box Score IRVINE, Calif.--After 70 minutes of scoreless soccer, host Concordia opened up the scoring gates on their way to a 3-0 men's soccer win over Hawai`i HIlo on Saturday afternoon at Eagles Field.

The Vulcans will return to HIlo after a grueling four-match road trip with a 3-10 overall record and a 2-6 mark in the Pacific West Conference. Concordia improves to 5-2 in the PacWest and 7-6 overall.

The first half was evenly played as UH HIlo had six shots (three on goal) compared to Concordia's eight (two on goal).

But the Eagles picked up the offensive intensity in the second half. They added opportunities on offense, and kept the Vulcans away from the goal. UH Hilo didn't get their first shot in the second half for 23 minutes.

Luke Ryan broke through for Concordia in the 71st minute. He scored the game's first goal, taking a pass from Bryan Lopez. Six minutes later, Ryan would add serious insurance (78:01), and then the Eagles would add one more score (80:28) when Jose Huerta found the back of the net.

The Vulcans picked up the offensive pace as well, with three shots in the final six minutes that had to be saved by Eagle keeper Mackenzie Hutchins. But the Eagles preserved the shutout, and Hutchins finished with eight saves.

UHH finished with 13 shots (eight on goal) and the Eagles tallied 20, eight on goal. Vulcan keeper Michael Harre had five saves. Concordia had five corner kicks in the match, while UH Hilo had none.

UH Hilo now returns for their three matches of the year, all at home--beginning with a Monday, Nov. 11 match with Holy Names.
