Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Vulcans win wild one at Chaminade, 3-2

HONOLULU, Hawai`i—Hawai`i Hilo ambushed host Chaminade with three goals in the first 51 minutes and then held on for dear life during a 3-2 men's soccer win on Friday afternoon at St. Louis Field.

Jorge Martinez had a goal and an assist as the Vulcans won the non-conference match to pick up their first victory of the year (1-4). The Silverswords are now 2-2 on the season. The two squads will play later in the year for their Pacific West Conference match, in Hilo.

Chaminade, trailing 3-0 in the second half, scored twice and then sent a flurry of shots at the Vulcan defense and keeper Michael Harre in the final moments—including five shots in the final seven minutes. But when the 90 minutes were complete, the Vulcans had the win despite being outshot 17-6 and 8-4 on goal.

Earlier, the Vulcans took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break on the only shot that they took in the first 45 minutes.

In the 44th minute (43:08), Tommy Seaver slipped past the defense and Chaminade keeper Michael Stafford for a shot. His attempt deflected off a defender to Israel Kalili, who deposited the ball into the net. It was the first collegiate goal and assist for the freshman duo.

UH Hilo wasted no time in the second half adding to their lead. Just 14 seconds after kick-off, Kalei Tolentino-Perry took a pass from Martinez and drilled the ball into the upper center of the goal to make it 2-0. Less than six minutes later (51:06), Martinez gave the Vulcans insurance by converting his penalty kick opportunity and give the Vulcans a 3-0 margin.

They would need all of that insurance as it turned out. Still trailing 3-0 with 17 minutes left, Chaminade rallied with a goal at 73:25 (Taka Kosins) and scored on a penalty kick at 80:32 (Reece Hambly). Down by just a goal, the Silverswords sent five more shots towards Harre. Tasman Turner's shot had to be saved at 86:10, and another CUH attempt banged off the left post with one minute to go.

One final attempt with 89:10 remaining went high and the Vulcans held on for the win.

UHH will now head into Pacific West Conference play, taking on Hawaii Pacific in Honolulu on Sunday at 3 pm.
