WAIPAHU, Hawai`i—Sunday's men's soccer match between Hawai`i Hilo and Hawai`i Pacific was much different than last week's 6-1 Shark win in Hilo.
Today's battle was much more evenly played, but still wound up in the HPU win column and on the loss ledger for the Vulcans after a 2-0 Sharks victory. The match was the first Pacific West Conference match of the season for UH Hilo (0-1), and they are now 1-5 on the year.
Hawai`i Pacific moved to 4-2-1 in 2019 and are an unblemished 2-0 in conference play with the win on Waipio Field #5.
Some of the same Shark nemesis' gave the Vulcans trouble today, but not as often.
Gerrit Arzberger, who scored twice and had an assist in Hilo, got the Sharks on the board first today just five minutes before the halftime break (40:00). His team led 1-0 after the first 45 minutes, despite the fact that UHH had eight shots to HPU's six. The Sharks had four shots on goal to the Vulcan's two.
The Sharks added insurance pretty early in the second half (56:47) when Paul Enzigmueller scored off an assist from Arzberger to make it 2-0. Enzigmueller also found the net last Saturday at UHH.
The Vulcans had three more second half shots that had to be saved, but HPU keeper Jeremy Zielinski did just that. He would end up with five saves in the match. His UHH counterpart
Michael Harre had five saves as well.
UH Hilo ended up with 17 shots on the day, five on goal. Kalei Tolentino-Perry had nine of UHH's attempts. HPU had 14 shots, six of them on goal. The Sharks had nine corner kicks to UH Hilo's none.
The Vulcans now return home for their next three matches, beginning with a Wednesday match (Oct. 9) against Notre Dame de Namur. Start time at the UHH field is 7 p.m.
