HONOLULU, Hawai`i--University of Hawai`i Hilo women's soccer coach
Gene Okamura must be starting to believe in the old adage, "if it weren't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all."
Okamura's Vulcans outshot host Chaminade 13-2 after halftime, including 9-0 in shots on goal but still couldn't get the ball into the back of the net, settling for a 0-0 deadlock on Friday morning at St. Louis Field.
The Vulcans are now 1-3-2 on the season, while Chaminade moves to 0-1-2. UH Hilo has two 0-0 ties on its 2019 ledger, and two losses on sudden death goals in the second overtime.
The match was the final non-conference contest for both schools. UH Hilo will stay in Honolulu to open Pacific West Conference play on Sunday against Hawaii Pacific.
After an even first half, which showed Chaminade with a slight 5-4 edge in shots, the Vulcans went on the attack after intermission.
The visitors peppered Silversword goalkeeper Naomi Takata after the break, with eight shots in the second half, including four on goal. But Takata stopped every opportunity, sending the match into overtime.Â
In the combined 20 minutes of extra time, the Vulcans had five more shots, including three that Takata had to save. The Silverswords didn't have a shot in either overtime.
Takata finished the match with 10 saves, while Vulcan keeper
Bailey Cahill also earned the shutout with a pair of saves (both in the first half). UH Hilo had nine different players record shots, led by
Brenna Rill's four shots--all of them on goal.Â
The Vulcans, who fell to Hawaii Pacific in double overtime last weekend in Hilo (3-2), will take on the Sharks in a conference match-up on Sunday at Waipio Field #5. Start time is noon.
