WAIPAHU, Hawai`i—The next time the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans see Hawai`i Pacific's Ebony Madrid, it will be too soon.
For the second weekend in a row, the Sharks high-scoring senior broke UH Hilo's heart with the winning goal during a 1-0 HPU win over the Vulcans at Waipio Field #5 on Sunday afternoon. Madrid, who scored three times last Saturday in Hilo during a 3-2 double-overtime Sharks win, served up the game winner today in the 77
th minute, breaking up a 0-0 tie.
The Sharks improved to 4-3-1 on the year and evened up their Pacific West Conference record at 1-1. UH Hilo, who now has four-one goal losses on their ledger, fell to 1-4-2 overall and to 0-1 in the PacWest.
Madrid, who is tied for the PacWest lead with eight goals on the season, pushed in the match winner at 76:25 after taking a pass from Brittany Ihara.
That was the only score of the day despite an onslaught of UH Hilo shots at Sharks' goalkeeper Marissa Froio. The Vulcans outshot the Sharks 13-5 in the first half and 20-14 for the match, but couldn't get a ball past Froio.
The Vulcans had their best opportunities in the first half. During a 15 minute stretch, UHH fired five shots at Froio—two by
Crystal Sanchez and one each by
Brianna Valencia,
Christina Kanellou, and
Kayla Kunihisa. They had five shots on goal in the first 45 minutes compared to HPU's one.
The second half was played more evenly, with Madrid and the Sharks finally breaking through with less than 15 minutes left. Madrid's shot was the only one to slip past Vulcan keeper
Bailey Cahill, who had four saves on the day.
The Vulcans now return home for this next three matches, beginning with a Wednesday match (Oct. 9) against Notre Dame de Namur. Start time at the UHH field is 4:30 p.m..
