HILO, Hawai`i—In Wednesday night's men's soccer match between Hawai`i Hilo and Notre Dame de Namur, the it looked like the visiting Argonauts scored the only goal of the night, but they did not win.
Host Hawai`i Hilo used what initially was determined an "own goal" (later changed) and terrific defense to post a 1-0 victory Wednesday night under the lights. It was only the second time in 18 tries that the Vulcans have defeated the Argonauts (14-2-2), and more importantly, UHH picked up their first Pacific West Conference win of the season (1-1).
The Vulcans are now 2-5 overall, while NDNU will return home at 4-6 on the season and 1-3 in the PacWest.
At 25:39, the Vulcans had just missed a shot off the foot of Kalei Tolentino-Perry. With the ball still at the UHH offensive end of the field,
Julius Becker sent a shot from about 30 yards out (left side) that an Argonaut defender attempted to head away. But the ball went high and over the top of the NDNU keeper, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.
That's how the score stayed until the half, and ultimately for the match.
The second half saw more attempts than the first on a wet and muddy track. But a tough Vulcan defense either pushed the ball out of harms' way, or UHH keeper
Michael Harre made another save. Harre pushed balls over the top of the goal and made sliding stops on his way to nine saves on the night.
Harre's final save came with just under a minute left, helping to seal the Vulcan victory.
UH Hilo had eight shots on the night, five saved by Argo's keeper Javier Santana. NDNU had 11 shots, nine on goal.
"We played a very strong defensive game," said Vulcan head coach
Paul Regrutto. "We did a great jump against corner kicks and in clearing balls out of danger. We played pretty brave, worked hard and had good organization."
It was pretty sweet redemption for a Vulcan team that fell to the Argonauts 8-1 in California last year.
"I am proud of how hard are guys worked," Regrutto added. "We have always had troubles with these guys in the past."
The Vulcans continue a three-match homestand with a contest a week from tonight (Oct. 16) against Dominican. Start time will be 7 pm
