HILO, Hawai`i—Rain in Hilo is a frequent occurrence, but it wasn't until the local downpour stopped that the Vulcans looked more at home.
UH Hilo scored twice in the span of a minute and a half, just three minutes into the second half, and played defense the rest of the way for a 2-0 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday on the UHH campus.
The Vulcans got into the PacWest win column (1-1) and improved to 2-4-2 overall. Notre Dame de Namur falls to 1-2 in conference play and they are now 4-4-2 on the year.
A downpour an hour before the match drenched the field, putting portions of it under water. First half play was ragged but even, with no real dangerous shots. When the 45 minutes had ended, each team had three shots on goal, while the Vulcans had nine shots overall and the Argonauts had seven.
The rain stopped at halftime. And the Vulcan fortunes picked up almost immediately.
Three minutes into the second half at the Argos end of the field,
Brenna Rill was trying to push a shot into a line of Argos. After the ball bounced off a NDNU player,
Nanea Wall slid in past the defense and directed the ball into the corner of the net.
For Wall, a freshman from Konawaena, it was her third goal of the year. For Rill, who had come close a couple of other times, it was just a warm up.
A little over a minute later, Rill was in front the goal an and took a long cross from the left side.
Brende Yoshizumi's perfect pass found Rill in stride, and she touched it into the net, giving UH Hilo a 2-0 lead just four and a half minutes into the second half.
In the 54
th minute, the Argonauts had a opportunity to come within a score on a penalty kick. But goalkeeper
Bailey Cahill guessed right, diving to her right to block the attempt.
There would be other attempts, but that was by far the most dangerous. Cahill ended up with six saves in the match, on her way to recording her third shutout of the year.
UH Hilo finished the night with 15 shots, seven of them on goal. NDNU had 11 shots, six on goal.
The Vulcans continue a three-match homestand with a contest a week from tonight (Oct. 16) against Dominican. Start time will be 4:30 pm
