Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Martinez scores twice, Vulcans top Hawks 2-0

HILO, Hawai`i—Senior Jorge Martinez kicked off his final week of collegiate soccer on a high note, scoring twice to help lead the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans to a 2-0 victory over Holy Names in a men's soccer match on Monday night at the UHH Field.

The win was the third in Pacific West Conference play for the Vulcans (3-6), and they improved to 4-10 overall. Holy Names dropped to 1-6-2 in PacWest play and to 4-10-2 on the year.

The match was the first of three final homestand outings in 2019 for the Vulcans. For Martinez, a senior from Madrid, Spain, the goals were his fifth and sixth of the season.

The Vulcans were the only team to get on the scoreboard in a very evenly played first half.  Martinez scored his fifth goal of the season at 29:03, picking up the remains after a header by Caesar Hjerten glanced off a Hawk defender, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.

At the break, both teams had four total shots, two shots on goal and four corner kicks.

Holy Names had three shots in the first ten minutes of the second half, but couldn't find the net.

Meanwhile, at 63:36, Martinez went to work again. He took a pass from Robert George, which brought out the keeper, and he drilled the clincher into the lower left-hand corner of the net.

The Vulcans defense did the rest. UHH goalkeeper Michael Harre earned the shutout and had four saves in the process.

Holy Names finished with the edge in shots at 11-7, but only had one more shot on goal than the Vulcans (4-3). The Hawks had eight corner kicks to UHH's five.

The Vulcans will continue their final week at home, hosting Academy of Art on Thursday at 7 pm. Senior Day will be on Saturday when the Vulcans host Chaminade at 3 pm.
