Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Vulcans win with 16 seconds left, 2-1

HILO, Hawai`i--Jorge Martinez's magical senior week continues, this time with a match-winning goal with 16 seconds left to lift the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans to a 2-1 win over Academy of Art in men's soccer action on Thursday night at the UHH Soccer Field.

Martinez, who had two goals on Monday night in a 2-0 win over Holy Names, converted a penalty kick with just ticks left on the clock to give UHH their second win in a row in the final week of the season. It was Martinez's seventh goal of the year, and he also had an assist earlier in the half.

The Vulcans improved to 5-10 on the season and to 4-6 in the Pacific West Conference. They will wrap up the season on Saturday on Senior Day against Chaminade. Start time is 3 pm.

Academy of Art ends their season at 1-16-1 overall and 0-11-1 in conference play.

Martinez's goal ended a night that looked for sure to continue into overtime.

The Urban Knights scored the match's first goal in the first half. At 35:16, Gillli Krisjansson put his team up during a half in which the Urban Knights outshot the Vulcans, 9-4, including 6-4 on goal.

But UHH evened things in the second half in the 66th minute. Kalei Tolentino-Perry scored his second goal of the season, picking up a rebound off a free kick from Martinez, to make it 1-1. It stayed that way heading into the final ten minutes.

The Vulcans ramped up the pressure with three shots in the final eight minutes that had to be saved. At the other end, after an Urban Knights corner kick, the Vulcans retrieved the ball and pushed up the sidelines. Robert George sprinted ahead towards the goal and was upended, earning a foul call with 16 seconds left. That play also earned a yellow card for an AAU player and an ejection for the Academy of Art coach.

Martinez then matched up against Urban Knight goalkeeper Davis King. King dove one way, and Martinez rolled the ball into the lower left-hand corner of the net--sending his teammates on to the field in celebration mode.

After getting outshot in the first half, the Vulcans flipped the story in the second. They held the Urban Knights to just one second half shot, but had ten of their own. The final tally had the Vulcans with 14 shots, nine on goal, while AAU had 10 shots, six on goal. UHH goalkeeper Michael Harre finished with five saves.
