HILO, Hawai`i—After a scoreless first half (and five straight halves without a score), the Hawai`i Hilo women's soccer team got the monkey off their back and the win as well during a 3-0 victory over Holy Names on Monday night at the UHH Soccer Field.
The Vulcans got back on the winning track to improve to 3-4-2 in the Pacific West Conference and to 4-7-4 overall. Holy Names is now 1-6-2 in conference play and 1-12-3 on the year.
Defender
Jodi Lillie scored twice and
Brende Yoshizumi tallied a goal, all after the halftime break. It had been four matches since the Vulcans scored or won, and they did both in the first of their season-ending three-match homestand.
The Vulcans had the pressure on the entire first half, but couldn't find the back of the net. They had ten shots in the first 45 minutes, five of them on goal. The Hawks had just two shots in the first half, one of them saved by Vulcan goalkeeper
Bailey Cahill.
But they didn't waste any time in the second half getting on the board. 27 seconds after the break, Lillie took a pass from
Sabrina Scott, which brought the Hawk goalkeeper out of the net. Lillie punched in the easy score to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
In the 60th minutes, it was Yoshizumi's turn. She was one-on-one with her defender, dribbled to her right and launched a shot into the left upper corner of the net to make the count 2-0.
Lillie added her second goal of the night and third of the season on a free kick at 72:38. She sent it right down the center into the top of net past the leaping Hawk keeper to account for the final tally of 3-0.
The Vulcans finished with 20 shots on the night, 10 on goal. Holy Names had six, three of them saved. Cahill had the one first half save, and
Ysabela Gabrielle Barin had two saves off the bench.
Yoshizumi had five of UHH's shots, while
Brenna Rill, Lillie and
Christina Kanellou had three each.
The Vulcans will continue their final week at home, hosting Academy of Art on Thursday at 4:30 pm.
