Vulcans end SoCal trip with loss to Eagles

IRVINE, Calif.—Playing their third undefeated southern California team in a week, and partaking in their fourth match in eighth days, the Hawai`i Hilo women's soccer team fell to Concordia on Saturday afternoon at Eagles Field, 3-0.

Concordia improved to 6-0-1 in the Pacific West Conference and to 8-3-2 on the year. The Vulcans will come home 2-4-2 in the PacWest and 3-7-4 overall. They went 0-3-1 on the murder's row SoCal trip.

Analisa Gjonovich scored twice for the Eagles and Megan Husey had a goal and an assist for streaking Concordia, who has won six in a row and has not lost since October 2 to Biola in a non-conference match.

Concordia and Gjonovich didn't waste any time in getting the host Eagles on the board.

The Eagles came out firing, putting a shot on goal just 39 seconds into the match that Vulcan goalkeeper Bailey Cahill had to save. 30 seconds later, Gjonovich found paydirt to put her team up 1-0.

The Vulcans had a flurry of offensive opportunities midway through the first half, firing five shots during a six-minute period, but each was denied by Concordia and keeper Kaelyn Whitcomb. Concordia took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

UH Hilo was still within a score 25 minutes into the second half until the Eagles added two quick strikes. Gjonovich scored her second goal in the 73rd minute (72:08) with an assist from Husey, and Husey got her own score 50 seconds later (72:57) to kill any Vulcan thoughts of a comeback.

The Vulcans had only three shots in the second half as the Concordia defense clamped down. UHH finished with nine shots, four of them saved by Whitcomb. The Eagles had 15 total shots, 10 of them on goal. Concordia had six corner kicks to UH Hilo's one. Cahill had seven saves for the Vulcans.

The Vulcans now make their way back to Hilo for their final three matches of the year, all at home. That final stand begins with a Nov. 11 match with Holy Names (4:30 pm).
