IRVINE, Calif.—Concordia's all-everything Brian Chambers had a school record 16 assists to go with 13 points to help lead the second-place Eagles to a 98-81 win over Hawai`i Hilo on Saturday night at the CU Arena.
Defeating the top two teams in the Pacific West Conference within 48 hours proved to be too tall a task for the Vulcans, who upset No. 8 Point Loma on Thursday night. With the win, the Eagles remain in the second slot with a 15-3 record, and they are 19-8 overall. The Vulcans fall back to .500 at 11-11 on the year and 9-9 in the PacWest.
Larry Bush had 26 points to lead the Vulcans, two nights after scoring 27 at PLNU.
In a battle between two of the top defensive teams in the PacWest, offense turned out to be the hallmark of the contest.
Concordia shot 61 percent from the field and the Vulcans converted 55 percent of their shots. Defense still forced a huge amount of turnovers for both sides, with the Vulcans giving it away 24 times (after just four turnovers at Point Loma) and Concordia had 23. The Eagles controlled the boards with a 35-18 edge.
The Eagles led the entire game. They shot 69 percent from the floor in the first ten minutes to build a 12-point lead (27-15).
James Griffin would help a first half comeback effort with a three-pointer a few minutes later to cut it to five points (27-22). Griffin's step-back trey at the top of key at the end of the half made it 50-42, Concordia.
In the sizzling first half, the Eagles shot 67 percent and the Vulcans were at 60. Bush had 16 points.
Baskets by Bush and
Denhym Brooke right after intermission made it a 50-46 game, but the Eagles quickly answered. Cameron English went to work inside, scoring eight points on four consecutive possessions to push Concordia's lead back out to 12 points.
The Eagles led by 19 points with 8:30 left, and the Vulcans would get no closer than 12 points after that. All that was left was to see how many assists Chambers would get, and he got his 16
th in the final moments to tie Danny Barajas' mark (1996).
Bush's 26 points included a perfect 9-for-9 at the free throw line. Griffin added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists, and
Kupaa Harrison had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists before fouling out. Brooke was also in doubles figures with 11 points.
In addition to Chambers, the Eagles had a number of offensive stars. English finished with 20 points, hitting 9-of-10 shots from the floor, and Robert Taylor bombed in 28 (10-of-14).
