IRVINE, Calif.—Scoring 22 runs via 32 hits, the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans swept host Concordia in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader on Monday at Eagle Field, 10-6 and 12-7.
In doing so, the Vulcans won three of four games from the Eagles to move above .500 in conference games at 8-6. They are also 10-11 overall, while Concordia drops to 10-13 on the year and 5-3 in the PacWest.
Brandyn Lee-Lehano, who pitched in all four games of the series, threw a total of 3.2 innings today and did not give up a run. He earned the win in the nightcap, benefiting from six Vulcan runs in the first extra inning (eighth).
The Vulcans rallied back from what looked a series-tying defeat in the second game. Trailing 6-5 from the fourth inning until the seventh, UH Hilo picked up the tying run in the seventh on
Kyle Yamada's RBI-single with two outs to make it 6-6.
In the top of the eighth, the Vulcan offense came unglued. They scored six runs via five hits, including
Mana Manago's three-run triple.
Rustin Ho had an RBI-single in the inning and Yamada brought home another run with a bunt. Heading into the bottom of the inning, the Vulcans had a 12-6 lead.
Casey Yamauchi had three hits and two RBI in the nightcap, and
RJ Romo had a trio of hits and three RBI. Manago continued his torching of Eagle pitching with three hits in three at-bats. In the three Vulcan wins over the Eagles, the senior second baseman went 11-for-14 with eight RBI. Yamada had two hits, as did Ho.
In the first game, the Vulcans pounded out 14 hits and added three insurance runs in the ninth inning to close the door on their hosts, 10-6. Manago,
Kobie Russell and Yamauchi had three hits each and Yamada added a pair as the Vulcans continue to swing hot bats.
Yamada (single), Yamauchi (single) and Russell (RBI-single) got the Vulcans going right out of the box. The Eagles bounced right back with three runs in the bottom half of the first, but
Jaryn Kanbara's RBI-hit in the third tied the game at 3-3.
Both teams scored twice in the fourth, with Yamada spanking an RBI-triple. With the count 5-5, Manago drove home Russell with a double (6-5) and the Vulcans added an unearned run in the seventh (7-5). Three runs crossed the plate in the ninth as Manago and
Dylan Sugimoto had RBI base knocks.
Travis Burleson was the grateful recipient of all that offense, improving to 3-1 on the year despite not having his best stuff. The sophomore pitched 6.1 workhorse innings and gave up nine hits and five runs. He struck out five. Lee-Lehano pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing only one hit with two strikeouts.
UH Hilo's win over Concordia bounced the Eagles from the top spot in the PacWest, allowing Azusa Pacific to grab that slot (6-2).
The Vulcans will now have a couple of days off before taking on the Cougars in a four-game series, March 21-23. APU is ranked No. 3 in the NCAA D-II West Region.
