HILO, Hawai`i—Visiting Biola won the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Wong Stadium via the arm of Brayden Englert (4-1) and then went long ball in the nightcap for an 11-3 victory to complete a doubleheader sweep of UH Hilo.
The Eagles won three of the four games in the series to improve to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans fell to 4-9 on the year and to 2-4 in the PacWest.
Englert, a 6-foot-3 freshman, tossed nine complete innings in the first game, allowing only four hits and one run. He didn't walk a batter and fanned three Vulcans. In the series finale, the Eagles got home runs from Connor Kostecka, RJ Bates and Jackson Collins, and the visitors scored in every inning except the third to cruise to the win.
In the opener, Englert gave up a first inning run to the Vulcans via
Kobie Russell's RBI-single that plated
RJ Romo, who had singled. He gave up a hit in the second inning but then proceeded to retire 17 Vulcans in a row into the eighth inning. He allowed a two-out single to
Dylan Sugimoto, but then retired the next four batters to close the door and improve to 2-2 on the season.
Biola scored a pair of runs in the third inning, thanks in part to RJ Cruz's two-run double—one of three hits for Cruz in the game. The Eagles would score one more run in the seventh, and another in the eighth.
Christian Sadler pitched well enough for UH Hilo, allowing six hits in six innings and two earned runs, but took the loss (0-2).
In the second contest. Biola scored 11 times and laced 14 hits in the seven-inning game. UH Hilo had six hits, including three in the third when they scored a run on
John Bicos' double, fueled by singles from Romo and
Casey Yamauchi. Russell had an RBI-single in the first inning, but overall the six hits (two by Yamauchi) left them far short of what they would need.
Travis Burleson pitched five innings and took the loss for the Vulcans (1-1).
UH Hilo will look to get back on track next weekend, hosting Fresno Pacific in a four-game series that begins on Thursday night at 6 pm.
