Pioneers rally for 4-3 win over Vulcans

TURLOCK, Calif.--After winning earlier in the day on the final play of the game, the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans felt the sting of the other side with a 4-3 loss in eight innings to Cal State East Bay on Friday night.

The Pioneer's Jennifer Palmares singled down the right field line in the bottom of the eighth to bring home Megan Araneta with the winning run, capping a wild comeback that saw CSUEB on the short end of a 3-1 score in the bottom of seventh inning.

Despite a 2-1 win over Cal State San Marcos earlier in the day, the Vulcans are now 1-1 in the Tournament of Champions and 22-12 on the year. Cal State East Bay improved to 9-22 on the season.

The Vulcans looked to be on their way to being 2-0 in the tournament, taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. UH Hilo had scored a run in the top of the second when Danielle Antolin grounded out with the bases loaded. Kiarra Lincoln added an RBI-single in the sixth, and they would score another in the inning when pinch runner Brandee Chinen raced home on Lincoln's stolen base.

Valerie Alvarado had been cruising in the pitcher's circle for UHH, but the Pioneers showed they weren't done in the sixth, scoring on a throwing error to cut the margin to one run (3-1). In the seventh, a triple by Emilie Portesi brought in another run in CSUEB's last chance, and Courtney Leyba singled on a 3-2 count to tie the game moments later at 3-3. After Alvarado gave up a walk, Leah Gonzales entered for her and got out of a bases loaded jam to send the game to extra innings.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect (runner placed on second to start the inning), the Vulcans failed to score in the top of the inning. But the Pioneers wasted no time, getting Palmares' winning hit without an out on the board to complete the improbable comeback.

Both teams had just six hits in the game. Lincoln and Vevesi Liilii had two hits each for UHH.  The Vulcans left 10 runners on base. Gonzales took the loss (6-5) and Abby Burkholder earned her first win of the year for the Pioneers with a complete game performance (1-2).

The Vulcans have two more games on Saturday against CCAA teams, taking on Cal State Monterey Bay at 4:30 and Chico State at 7 pm.
