TURLOCK, Calif.--Hawai`i Hilo's
Isabelle Mejia gave up just one run in the pitcher's circle, scored the tying run and cheered from the dugout as
Vevesi Liilii raced home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to give the Vulcans a 2-1 win over Cal State San Marcos in UHH's opener at the Tournament of Champions.
UH Hilo improved to 22-11 on the season and will play again tonight against Cal State East Bay at 7 pm Pacific time. Cal State San Marcos dropped to 8-18 with the heartbreaking loss.
At the plate, Mejia singled to lead off the seventh inning, with her team trailing 1-0. She moved to second on a passed ball, and then scored when Liilii laced a double down the left field line. Those were just the second and third Vulcan hits in the ball game off of the Cougars' Ellie Smith.
Liilii moved up a base, and then scampered home with the winning run on a Smith wild pitch.
Earlier, the Cougars struck first when Nikki Andelin doubled to lead off the game and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly. Smith and Mejia matched zeros after that, with no threats by either team until the Vulcans fought back in their last at-bats.
Mejia improved to 8-1, giving up just three hits, one run, two walks and she struck out four. Smith was almost as good, also allowing three hits, two walks and she fanned four.
