WAIPAHU, Hawai`i—Back in mid-February, Hawai`i Pacific hosted Hawai`i Hilo at Hans L`Orange Park and the Sharks outscored the Vulcans 53-29 in winning the first three games of a four-game series.
Fast forward a little short of two months later, in the same park and the same two teams. This time the Vulcans are delivering most of the blows during a four-game sweep of the Sharks, outscoring their island rivals 36-17 while also taking the final non-conference game of the series on Sunday afternoon, 5-4.
UH Hilo, who began the year 3-6—all in games against Hawai`i Pacific, has now won eight straight to improve to 18-15 on the season. The Sharks fall to 19-19.
The Vulcans used a familiar blueprint, at least on the defensive side of the field, to claim the victory in the closest game of the series.
Starting pitcher
Travis Burleson got the Vulcans tthrough the fifth inning, allowing just two earned runs but four total, and handed the ball over to
Brandyn Lee-Lehano. The rubber-armed middle reliever, in his 19
th appearance of the season, threw three nearly perfect innings—allowing just one hit and no runs. He then passed the torch on to
John Kea, who closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning to pick up his seventh save of the year.
The game was tied at 4-4 when Lee-Lehano entered, and the Vulcans scored the go-ahead run in the eighth with some big help from the Sharks. Lee-Lehano benefitted to get win, improving to 4-0 on the year.
Earlier, HPU took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Sean Coffey's two-run triple. UHH got one back in the third when
Mikey Rita singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on
Rustin Ho's single.
The Vulcans took the lead in the fourth on
Jaryn Kanbara's two-run single, scoring
John Bicos (HBP) and
Chris Aubort (single).
Kobie Russell made it a 4-2 game for UHH in the fifth inning with a solo shot, his third home run of the year.
But the Sharks tied it in the bottom half of the fifth with two runs on two hits and a Vulcan error. From there zeros were on the board until the top of the eighth when the Vulcans scored what would turn out to be the winning run without a hit, taking liberty of two Shark errors.
The Vulcans had just six hits in the game against four HPU pitchers and no UHH player had more than one hit. Coffey lead the Sharks with a 2-for-4 day, with two RBI and a triple.
The Vulcans now get 12 days off before hosting Holy Names in a four-game series at Wong Stadium, April 20 and 22.
