NAMPA, Idaho—So far, if it wasn't for bad luck, the 2019 Hawai`i Hilo women's soccer team wouldn't have any luck at all. So the old saying goes.
For the second time in a week, the Vulcans were the victims of a late deciding goal during a 2-1 loss to host Northwest Nazarene on Thursday night at the NNU Soccer Field. The Vulcans also fell to Cal State Monterey Bay with 30 seconds left in the second overtime on Saturday, and tied Cal State East Bay on Monday, 0-0. They are now 0-2-1 heading into a Saturday match against Central Washington.
NNU's Maddy Parton, who had assisted on a goal earlier in the match, scored the game-winner in the 84
th minute. In a bout that looked like it was heading to overtime, Parton's shot came from behind a group of players about 15 yards out and bounded past
Bailey Cahill, the Vulcan keeper.
That ended the scoring in a match that saw plenty of aggressive offense, despite the low score.
The Nighthawks, who are now 2-1, came out on the attack, firing four shots in the first six minutes. The fourth shot found a home when returning All-GNAC selection Rikki Myers got in a one-on-one situation with Cahill and pushed the ball into the lower left portion of the net.
After a slow start, the Vulcans would soon get their offense going.
Brenna Rill just missed on a long shot that went over the cross bar, and
Piper Collado had a nice header that had to be saved by NNU keeper Alexis Montoya. When the first 45 minutes were in the books, the Nighthawks had a 10-7 shot edge and the 1-0 lead.
UH Hilo finally got on the board in the 67
th minute.
Christy Jensen, a junior transfer from Sierra College, grabbed a rebound off of Montoya, who had blocked a shot taken by Freshman
Nanea Wall, and dropped it into the goal. That tied the match at 1-1.
Both teams made runs in the final 20 minutes before Parton's winner.
Jodi Lillie has UH Hilo's final shot with just under a minute to go, but it was saved by Montoya. The NNU keeper finished with six saves in the match, while Cahill had five.
The Nighthawks ended up with 20 shots in the game to UHH's 13.
The Vulcans will play Central Washington in a neutral site match at NNU on Saturday before returning to Hilo. Start time is 2:30 p.m. Mountain Time.
