Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars top Vulcans in double overtime

SAN MARCOS, Calif.—Cal State San Marcos' Juan Salazar scored two goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime to lead the host Cougars to a 2-1 comeback win over UH Hilo in men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at The Cage.

Salazar's sudden death winner ended the match at 104:34. It was the first two scores of the year for the sophomore from Columbia, during a match that saw plenty of offense but little scoring.

The Vulcans begin the 2019 season at 0-1, while the Cougars improve to 2-3. The Vulcans continue their southern California trip with a Saturday night match at UC San Diego (7 p.m. PT).

It was a tough loss in the season debut for UH Hilo, having waited nearly a month from the start of preseason camp to play their opener. They played toe-to-toe with the Cougars in a match that could have gone either way.

UH Hilo finished the game with 20 shots, six of them on goal. The Cougars fired 27 shots at new Vulcan goalkeeper Michael Harre, 10 of which he saved.

The Vulcans led 1-0 after a fast-paced first half, where the only score on the board came via a penalty kick.

The Cougars had ten first half shots, six of which had to be saved by Harre. The junior transfer (Maryville Univ.) made a pair of those late in the half, in both cases diving to his right to block shots that had some zip on them.  The Vulcans had nine shots in the first 45 minutes, four of them on goal. Four shots came from Kaleihalia Tolentino-Perry, including one that rocked hard off the left post late in the half.

The most important shot in the first 45 minutes came at 13:25. Just prior, UH Hilo's Bo Antonissen got tripped up in the box by CSUSM keeper Justin Tesar, leading to a penalty kick for the Vulcans. Jorge Martinez calmly deposited the freebie into the left lower corner of the net, giving the Vulcans their first goal of the match, and of the season.

The second half looked similar to the first, at least for the first 35 minutes. Keepers Harre and Tesar stopped scoring opportunities with saves. Both teams continued to show offensive aggression but couldn't put the ball in the goal.

That is, until 78:26 when Juan Salazar took a pass from John Williamson on the right side, and raced past Vulcan defenders to put a shot past Harre to make it 1-1. Even in the final minutes of regulation, both teams had solid opportunities, but the shots either sailed wide or were saved by Harre and Tesar.

At the end of regulation, the Vulcans had a total of 19 shots (six on goal), while the Cougars had 24 shots, ten of them on goal.

The first overtime saw just one solid opportunity, when Salazar had a shot saved by Harre. But the second overtime was action packed. Harre saved another Salazar shot less than two minutes in, and moments later Salazar sailed a ball high right. The Vulcans answered with a ball sent by Caesar Hjerten towards the goal that was blocked, giving the ball back to the Cougars.

A little over a minute later, after a thrown in by the Cougars, Salazar gained possession and sent a short shot past Harre into the lower right corner of the net for the game winner.

Salazar, who did not start in the match, had an astonishing 16 shots overall, seven of them on goal. Tolentino-Perry led the Vulcans with six shots, two of them on goal.

The Vulcans now face the 4-0 Tritons of UC San Diego. UCSD plays Point Loma on Thursday night, taking a 12-1 goal edge on the year into the match.
