Vulcans drop another 2-1 heartbreaker

Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif.—Host UC San Diego overcame a 1-0 deficit and 78 minutes of playing a man down to rally for a 2-1 victory over visiting Hawai`i Hilo on Saturday night at the Triton Soccer Stadium.

The Tritons improved to 5-1 on the year with the win in front of a full house at home, while the Vulcans are now 0-2.

UCSD, who came into the match having outscored their opponents 13-3, lost a player 12 minutes into the match and had to play with ten the rest of the way. The Vulcans put the pressure on them early, scoring a beautiful goal in the 26th minute when Pedro Werneck took a long pass on a short hop and flicked the ball into the net.

UH Hilo had a 6-2 shot advantage halfway through the first half, but the Tritons started to gather themselves from there. They finally broke through in the 40th minute when Shaheen Daneshvar, who had just checked into the match less than a minute earlier, found himself in a one-on-one situation with Vulcan keeper Michael Harre, pushing the ball just past him into the lower left corner of the net.

With the score 1-1 at the half, both teams had seven shots, with four of UHH's on goal and two of UCSD's having to be saved.

The second half was evenly played and looked to be heading to overtime. But with just two minutes and seven seconds left, the Tritons punched in the game winner when Aidan Cuevas fed Nick Cirrito for the score.

The Vulcans had one more solid opportunity, but Bo Antonissen's shot was blocked, and the Vulcans couldn't set anything up on the following corner kick.

Both teams finished the match with 14 shots. The Vulcans had eight on goal, and UCSD had four. The Tritons, who are moving to NCAA Division I next year, had a 11-2 corner kick advantage.

The Vulcans lost their only other match this season in heartbreaking fashion, also 2-1 after taking a 1-0 lead (to Cal State San Marcos).

The Vulcans have another stiff challenge in front of them in the final match of this road trip on Monday when they take on two-time defending NCAA West Region champion Cal Poly Pomona. That match at Kellogg Stadium will start at 6 pm Pacific time.

Stats from the match will be available later tonight.
