HILO, Hawai`i—Hawai`i Hilo shot lights out from the free throw line and from behind the arch on their way to a 79-58 win over visiting Holy Names on Monday in women's basketball action at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
The Vulcans hit 15 of their 16 free throw attempts and nailed 8-of-16 three-point shots. They led from start to finish in picking up the win.
The Vulcans snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory, to improve to 5-8 in Pacific West Conference play and to 6-11 overall. The Hawks are now 1-14 this season and 1-10 in conference play.
UH Hilo is also now 6-4 this year in the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Allie Navarette had 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Guard
Mandi Kawaha rained in 20 points, missing only two shots all night. She was 7-of-9 from the floor, hit all four of her shots beyond the arch and hit both free throw attempts. She also just missed a double-double with nine board and had four assists.
The Vulcans established a quick lead in the game. They ran out to a 10-2 margin in the first three minutes. They pushed that score to 18-4 with 3:15 to go in the quarter, before the Hawks bit back to make it 24-13 at the end of the period.
UH Hilo pushed their lead to 18 points twice in the second half, as Kawaha was hot from three-point range with a trio of treys. She had 15 points at intermission and Navarette had 10. But the Hawks closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to make the score at the break, 37-27.
Holy Names scored the first basket of the third quarter and later in the period cut the Vulcan lead to five points—twice. Both times (46-41 and 48-43) came via baskets from Monica Valenzuela. UHH answered with baskets from Navarette and a trey from
Sara Shimizu to put the count at 53-43 at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth, the Hawks were never able to cut the lead to single digits. The Vulcans scored 26 points in the fourth quarter to win running away, 79-58.
Kim Schmelz had 12 points for UH Hilo. Freshman Amaya Ervin had a career-high 13 points to lead the Hawks, and Gernijah Martin added 12 points and eight boards. But the Hawks hit just 30 percent of their shots and converted only 4 of 23 three-point attempts in dropping their fourth straight game.
The Vulcans will continue this four-game homestand with a Friday (Jan. 31) contest versus Academy of Art. Start time is 5 p.m.
