HILO, Hawai`i—UH Hilo's magical run at home finally came to an end on a cool, rainy night at the Afook-Chinen Civic Audtorium, with the Vulcans coming up short vs the Academy of Art Urban Knights, 76-66.
The Vulcans shot just 25 percent from three-point range (5-of-20) and an even cooler 53 percent from the free throw line (9-of-17) in losing for only the second time all season at the Civic (7-2). The loss drops the Vulcans back to the .500 mark at 9-9 overall and 7-7 in the Pacific West Conference. Academy of Art, who won two of three games in Hawaii, is now 5-9 in the PacWest and 7-14 on the year.
Despite the loss, the Vulcans remain in sixth place in the PacWest.
"We pretty much came up short in every aspect of the game," said Vulcan head coach
GE Coleman. "We didn't play good defense, we didn't shoot well and we got pounded on the boards. If we play like that against Chaminade on Sunday, we will get beat by a lot more than 10 points."
The Urban Knights controlled the boards (41-17) and shot 55 percent from the field.
Academy of Art never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 11-2 advantage a few minutes in. Josh Bagley had 10 first half points, and his team led by as many 11 points in the first half. They would take a 37-30 lead into the halftime break.
The Vulcan battled back in the second half, pulling to within two points with 13 minutes to go on a
Elisha Duplechan three-pointer (47-45), and then tied the game on another Duplechan basket. (47-47). A
Kupaa Harrison lay-up, off a no-look pass from Duplechan, tied it again at 49-49.
But the Urban Knights answered with a 6-0 run and later with a 10-2 blitz, and the Vulcans would get no closer than five points after that (68-63) on an
Isaiah Duplechan trey with a minute left.
Sasa Vuksanovic led the Vulcans with 18, hitting 8-of-12 shots. Duplechan added 17 (7-of-11), Harrison had 11 and
Kaleb Gilmore added ten off the bench.
Academy of Art had four players in double figures, led by 12 points each from Josh Hill and Dante Williams. Hill (11 rebounds) and
Victor Ruiz de Carranza both had double-doubles. De Carranza put up 11 points and 12 boards. Bagley finished with ten points and Stefan Milivojevic added 11. De Carranza is a fifth-year player who began his collegiate career at UHH in 2014-15.
The Vulcans will wrap up this four-game homestand on Sunday with a 7:30 p.m. match-up with island rival Chaminade.
