Sea Lions race pace Vulcans

HILO, Hawai`i—Momma said that there would be nights like these, you just hope to not have to go through them too often.

Visiting Point Loma shot lights out and controlled the board on their way to an easy 89-59 victory over host Point Loma on Saturday night at the Civic Auditorium. The defending Pacific West Conference Sea Lions improved to 5-1 in league play and they are 9-3 overall. The Vulcans fell to 4-6 overall and to 2-4 in conference action.

The Vulcans were led by Sasa Vuksanovic's 16 points. Elisha Duplechan added 14 and Kaleb Gilmore came off the bench to add 13. Both Vuksanovic and Gilmore had four assists.

Kaden Anderson led a balanced Sea Lion attack with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

This one was Point Loma's to own from start to finish.

After a Damani Whitlock three-pointer gave UHH a 3-1 lead moments in, Point Loma answered and began to crank it into high gear. They went on a 20-3 run and led 27-9 at the nine-minute mark. They scored inside and outside, everywhere except from beyond the arch. At halftime, they led 41-22, shooting 59 percent from the field while holding a 18-8 rebound advantage.

In the second half, PLNU pushed their margin 60-31 about seven minutes in and the only drama left was what the final score would be.

The Sea Lions shot 60 percent from the field in the game, and ended up with a 36-18 edge on the boards.

"We struggled tonight, obviously," head coach GE Coleman said on the KPUA AM 670 post-game show. "We've got the flu running through us and we just didn't have the energy that we normally have. That's no excuse, but it didn't help."

Vulcan leading scorer on the season, Kupaa Harrison, was one of those that was in bed all day. Averaging 19.8 points a game before tonight, he didn't have a field goal and scored just one point.

The Vulcans will play game three of a five contest homestand on Monday night (7:30 pm), taking on Biola at the Civic Auditorium.
