Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Vulcans hold off Penguins, 68-64

HILO, Hawai`i—Vulcan head coach GE Coleman wasn't the happiest man in the building, but he wasn't the saddest either after a UH Hilo 68-64 win over Dominican on Thursday night at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

The Vulcans, who have now won three of four to start 2020, also landed on the .500 mark at 6-6 overall and 4-4 in the Pacific West Conference. Dominican, who had won two of its last three games, dropped to 2-5 in the PacWest and to 2-11 overall.

After 11 games this season, it was UHH's first contest against a team with a losing record. That's where Coleman showed his displeasure.

"We need to play better than that," he said after the game. "We played a little like we could just show up and win. This league is too good for that."

In a game where no one led by more than four points in the second half, the Vulcans needed clutch play from senior Kupaa Harrison down the stretch and they got it.

Harrison recorded 17 of his 19 total points in the second half, including two driving baskets in the final minute.

"If Koop doesn't take over, we don't win that game," Coleman added.

Sasa Vuksanovic had 15 points (12 in the first half), Damani Whitlock had 12 and Kaleb Gilmore popped in 10 off the bench.

Jordan Williams had 20 points for the Penguins and Jaelen Ragsdale added 19.

The score was tied at the half (31-31). The teams traded leads throughout the second half. A Harrison basket with a little over three minutes left gave the lead back to the Vulcans (58-56), and soon thereafter came his two driving baskets to help seal the game.

All in all, a win is a win.

"That's true," Coleman agreed. "We did have a lot of good play, including Glimore and Greg Walter off the bench. We just need to regroup and get ready for the next one."

The Vulcans will wrap up this five-game homestand with a Monday night game at the Civic Auditorium versus Notre Dame de Namur. Start time is 5 pm.
