Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Harrison does it again, helps UHH to first road win

OAKLAND, Calif.—Sometimes, the more things change, the more that they stay the same.

For the second time this season, UH Hilo's Kupaa Harrison broke the hearts of Holy Names fans and players by draining the winning shot, this time with six seconds left to give the Vulcans a 63-62 men's basketball victory over the Hawks on Monday night at the Conlan Center.

On January 28 in Hilo, Harrison hit a step-back three-pointer with one second left in overtime to give UHH a 79-76 win. Tonight, it may have only been slightly less dramatic as Harrison took the ball the length of the court, worked around two picks, stepped back and then forward to drop in a 10-footer with six tics left on the clock.

Holy Names called timeout but couldn't convert at the other end to fall short for the second time this year to UH Hilo.

While that looked familiar, winning on the road isn't. It was the first road victory of the year for UH Hilo.

The Vulcans snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 8-9 in the Pacific West Conference and to 10-11 overall. Holy Names is now 6-11 in the PacWest and 8-15 on the year. With Hawaii Pacific's loss tonight to Azusa Pacific and the Vulcans' win, UH Hilo moved back into sixth place in the PacWest Conference.

Harrison finished with 27 points, 21 of those in the first half. He hit 12-of-19 shots and also had nine rebounds. Elisha Duplechan added 11 points and Sasa Vuksanovic contributed 10 points and seven boards.

Holy Names led for almost the entire first half, but not by more than seven points. Three straight baskets by the senior forward Harrison clipped the margin to two points at the break, 31-29.  He hit 9 of 14 shots in the first half.

The teams traded baskets in the second half. Nobody led by more than four points through the first ten minutes.

With HNU leading 47-44 with 11:30 to go, the Vulcans caught fire and went on a 10-0 run. That blitz was fueled in part by Kaleb Gilmore, who had two three's and a field goal during that run. That made the score 54-47 with 7:15 left.

After Duplechan scoreed with 3:40 to go, the Vulcans led 61-57. But UHH wouldn't score again on their next four possessions. The Hawks were fruitless on two of their opportunities, but they finally took the lead back with 1:08 left when Justice Di Corsi converted a three-point play to give his team a 62-61 lead.

The Vulcans turned the ball over on their next possession. After fouling, Holy Names missed two free throw attempts with 26 seconds remaining—setting up Harrison's final play.

Zamara Odom had 17 points and seven boards to lead the Hawks, with Rob Fuller chipping in 15.

The Vulcans continue this four-game road trip with a Thursday match-up at Notre Dame de Namur. Start time in Belmont is 5:30 p.m. PT.
