Vulcans honor Estrella, Alums

The UH Hilo baseball program used the occasion of its annual Alumni Game to honor one of their founders and celebrate each other on a Saturday afternoon at Wong Stadium.

Before the nine-inning contest, which was won by the Vulcans 9-1, UHH head coach Kallen Miyataki presented former leader Joey Estrella with a banner of his No. 1 jersey and his years of coaching at UHH (1976-2013). Estrella led the Vulcans program through their NAIA days, to NCAA Division I and Division II.

The banner will go on the Wong Stadium outfield fence.

The former Vulcans gave their 2020 team a good run early in the contest. They had a 1-0 lead through four inning, and trailed only 3-1 after six complete innings before things came unraveled later in the contest.

Close to 30 former Vulcan players returned to HIlo to play in today's game.

The Vulcans will return to game action on Feb. 28-29, hosting Biola in a four-game series.
