Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Vulcans finish road trip with win

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.—The UH Hilo women's basketball team gained a measure of revenge and wrapped a road trip with a victory at the same time with a 61-54 win over Academy of Art on Saturday afternoon at the Conlan Center.

The victory allowed the Vulcans to split the four games on their northern California road trip. They will return to Hilo with a 9-14 overall record and a 8-11 mark in the Pacific West Conference. Academy of Art, who defeated the Vulcans earlier this season in Hilo (74-64), is now 9-13 on the season and 7-11 in the PacWest.

The game was played on the campus of Dominican University.

Allie Navarette had 18 rebounds and 27 points to lead the Vulcans. After back-to-back games with 19 boards and breaking her own school record each time, she settled for 18 to give her 56 in her last three games.

Mikayla Tablit had 11 points, hitting a pair of three's. UH Hilo hit 8 of 20 treys overall and held a 43-36 rebound edge. Sara Shimizu was 3-for-3 from behind the arc for nine points. Tayler Bennett had 20 points for the Urban Knights and Jossel Morris added 17.

Academy of Art took the first lead of the game at 3-0, but the Vulcans answered with a 9-0 run. The Urban Knights battled back to lead 17-14 at the end of the first quarter.

ART U had a 22-21 margin midway through the second period before UHH went on another tear, this time closing the half on a 12-0 blitz. UH Hilo led 33-22 at intermission, having held the Urban Knights to 26 percent shooting, while the Vulcans nailed 5 of 11 shots from three-point range. Navarette was on fire, putting up 15 points in the first 20 minutes with a near double-double total of nine rebounds.

Back-to-back baskets by Navarette to start the third quarter gave the Vulcans a 13-point lead, but the Urban Knights reeled off a 13-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Morris to take a 38-37 lead. The teams exchanged bucket to the end of the quarter, which was tied at 43-43.

The Vulcans opened the fourth with a 7-0 run to take a 50-43 lead. The Urban Knights would go nearly six minutes without scoring, and the Vulcans would push their margin to 57-49 after a Shimizu trey with under two minutes left.

ART U would close to within four points (58-54) with 1:16 to go, got a steal with a chance to make it a one-possession game, but they missed two trey attempts of which Navarette rebounded the second one and was fouled. She hit two free throws to seal the game.

The Vulcans will play their final home game of the season this Saturday, hosting Hawaii Pacific in a 1 pm matinee contest.
