HILO, Hawai`i—In no mood for any kind of letdown, the Hawai`i Pacific women's basketball team continued their school-record roll, gliding past Hawai`i Hilo on Saturday afternoon at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium, 91-56.
It was the 21
st straight win for the Sharks and they improved to 25-1 overall. They are still unblemished in the Pacific West Conference at 20-0 and have clinched the league title. The Vulcans, who had won two of their last four games prior to today, are now 9-15 on the year and 8-12 in the PacWest.
The Sharks had four players in double figures, led by Starr Rivera's 22 points. Abbey Noblett added 18 for HPU, who shot 55 percent from the field, and out-rebounded the Vulcans, 40-26.
Allie Navarette had 24 points to lead the Vulcans, and she also pulled down eight rebounds. Seniors
Kim Schmelz and
Chyann Gabriel both had eight points on Senior Day for UHH.
The Vulcans held serve through the first five minutes, leading at 8-4 and never trailing until the Sharks took their first lead at 11-10 on a Rivera three-pointer at the five-minute mark. That would be part of a 10-0 run for HPU, and they wouldn't trail again.
The Sharks had a 28-19 first quarter lead and a 48-26 margin at halftime. Rivera missed only one shot in the first half and had 15 points. Noblett had 14, and Navarette had 11 for the Vulcans.
Navarette scored the first basket of the third quarter to make it 48-28, but UHH wouldn't get any closer the rest of the way. HPU shot 71 percent from the field in the third quarter to take a 72-39 lead into the final ten minutes. The play was more even in the fourth quarter (19-17) but the damage had already been done as the Sharks won their 25th game of the season.
The Vulcans will wrap up the 2019-20 season next weekend on Oahu, with a Thursday game at Chaminade and a Saturday contest at Hawaii Pacific.
