TUCSON, Ariz.--St. Mary's Staci Johns limited UH Hilo to just three hits and Rattlers used one big inning to get by the Vulcans on Friday at the Cactus Classic, 4-0.
St. Mary's (TX) improved to 3-9 with the win, while the Vulcans dropped to 3-6. UH Hilo will play No. 2 nationally ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville and Eastern New Mexico on Saturday.
The Rattlers scored three times in the second inning, thanks to a home run from Juliana Cerda and a triple off the bat of Victoria Aldridge to build a 3-0 lead. They would add another unearned run in the third to make the count 4-0.
Meanwhile, the Vulcans couldn't get anything going on offense against Johns. UHH didn't get their first hit until the third on
Darian Obara's single. Later,
Kiarra Lincoln would get a hit and
Billi Derleth had a pinch-hit single in the seventh, but the Vulcans couldn't get anyone past second base.Â
Other than the rough third inning, Vulcan starter
Leah Gonzales pitched well but got tagged with the loss.Â
After Saturday's games, UH Hilo will wrap up tournament play on Sunday versus Texas Permian Basin.
