TUCSON, Ariz.--Brinell Kaleikini hit a two-run homer,
Chloe Domingo drove in three runs and
Valerie Alvarado held Texas A&M-Kingsville to one plate crossing as Hawai`i Hilo upset the No. 1 nationally ranked team in Division II, 9-1.
The Vulcans, who would go on to defeat Eastern New Mexico later in the day, are now 5-6 overall. The Javelinas, who began the year at 9-1 with wins over four nationally ranked teams, dropped to 10-4. They have lost three of four at the Cactus Classic. The Vulcans are now 4-2 in Arizona.
Texas A&M-Kingsville was ranked No. 2 in the NFCAÂ Preseason poll, and moved up to No. 1 last week.
The Vulcans scored six runs in the second inning, had nine hits in the game and took advantage of four Javelina errors for the mercy rule win (five innings).
In a wild second inning, the Vulcans got help from four Texas A&M-Kingsville errors and had four singles. Domingo drove in two RBI's with one of the hits. In the fourth, Kaleikini drove in
Kimberly Olivas (hit by pitch) with a home run to make the score 8-1, and Domingo drove in another run in the top of the fifth with a base hit to make it 9-1.
Alvardo put the Javelinas down in order in the bottom half of the inning to complete the shortened game (eight run lead). Alvarado picked up her third win of the year, pitching five innings and allowing only three hits, one run, three walks and two strikeouts.Â
UH Hilo will wrap up Cactus Classic play on Sunday with a 10 am (Arizona time) game against Texas Permian Basin.Â
