Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Silverswords Deal Vulcans Another Blow

HONOLULU, Hawai`i—On Tuesday night at McCabe Gymnasium, the Chaminade men's basketball team defeated Hawai`i Hilo, 88-72, and there was almost a sense of déjà vu about it.

Last year, the Silverswords defeated the Vulcans on the final day of the regular season, helping to cripple the Vulcans postseason hopes. Tonight, they didn't deal a death blow, but they made it much more difficult for the Vulcans with just one game to play.

Just like last year, in 2020 it is going to come down to the final game of the year. The Vulcans need a win and a little bit of help.

Academy of Art also lost on Thursday, to Point Loma, leaving the two clubs in a tie for sixth place with one game to go. That one game for the Vulcans is against Hawaii Pacific on Saturday afternoon. Academy of Art plays at Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday.

If the Vulcans win and ART U loses, the Vulcans are heading to Azusa next week for the PacWest tournament for the first time. If the Urban Knights win or the Vulcans lose, Academy of Art goes. If they both win, the Urban Knights have the tiebreaker by virtue of two wins over the Vulcans this year.

The Vulcans are now 9-12 in the PacWest and 11-14 overall. Chaminade, who has clinched a spot in the PacWest tournament, finishes the regular season at 17-10 and 15-7 in conference play.

Kaleb Gilmore had a career-high 23 points for the Vulcans, most of them in the second half. Kupaa Harrison had 19 points and eight rebounds, and Sasa Vuksanovic contributed 14 points and seven boards.

Eliet Donley had 28 points for the Silverswords, missing only four shots from the field (11-15). Chaminade completed the season sweep of the Vulcans by shooting 56 percent from the field and outrebounding the Vulcans, 44-25.

On Senior Night, Chaminade jumped out to a 7-0 lead as the Vulcans didn't score for the first three and a half minutes. The Vulcans would battle back to within two points late in the half, but a 9-2 home team run closed the first 20 minutes and the Silverswords led at the break, 38-31.

The Silverswords opened the second half on a 7-2 blitz (45-33), and would lead by at least ten points for most of the second half. Three straight baskets by Gilmore, including a three-pointer with nine minutes remaining, cut the deficit to 62-56, but soon a Bill Awet three-pointer would push the lead back to double digits and it would stay there for the rest of the night.

The Vulcans converted just nine of 18 free throw attempts and they shot just 43 percent from the field.
