ST. GEORGE, Utah—Western Washington used a pair of home runs, a shutout pitching performance from Anna Kasner and free passes to waltz to a 10-0 mercy run victory over Hawai`i Hilo on Friday at the Dixie Courtyard Classic.
The Vulcans continue Courtyard Classic play later today vs. Northwest Nazarene (5:30 pm MT).
UH Hilo is now 1-2 on the season, while the Vikings improved to 3-4 on the year.
The Vulcans managed just three hits against the WWU ace, who struck out 15 batters during a win over Fort Lewis on Thursday. Kasner had three walks and seven strikeouts today against UHH.
WWU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning via a solo home run from Kira Dorn. After Vulcan starter
Valerie Alvarado issued three walks to start the second, Lauren Lo and Chantelle Shimabukuro singled home runs to make it 3-0.
The Vikings busted things open in the third, with five runs, two of them scampering home on a double by Jackie Lucido. Rachel Christenson added a two-run homer to add icing in the fourth.
Meanwhile, the Vulcans couldn't solve Kasner. They had two runners on base in each of the second and fourth innings, but couldn't score.
Alvarado took the loss (1-1).
Markie Okamoto,
Skylar Thomas and
Chloe Domingo had hit for the Vulcans.
