A men's tennis player and a women's softball pitcher are your winners of the UH Hilo Pepsi Athletes of the Week award, covering the time period from February 21-29.
Martin Soukal, the Pacific West Conference Freshman of the Year in 2019, is off to a good start as a sophomore. Winning two matches over Top 10 opponents in Waco, Texas, Soukal improved to 4-1 on the season while playing on the No. 1 singles court. He defeated the No. 4 nationally ranked player, Anish Sriniketh from St. Edward's TX, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, and also won in straight sets over No. 9 ranked Manuel Pilotto of Southeastern Oklahoma State, 6-4, 6-4. He had one more win while in Texas, winning 6-4, 7-5 against Jeremiah Gonzalez of St. Mary's. He also won his only completed doubles match. Last year, the Czech Republic native was 14-2 in singles and 17-3 in doubles.
Leah Gonzales came up big for the Vulcans in the pitching circle during a pair of wins for the Vulcans over Azusa Pacific last week. The senior right-hander came out of the bullpen in the first game, pitching four innings to pick up the win as the Vulcans rallied to triumph in eight innings, 5-4. She didn't give up a run and didn't walk a batter. She started the second game and went the complete seven innings, again earning the victory in a 5-1 knockout of the Cougars. For the doubleheader, she pitched 11 innings, allowed just one run and didn't walk a batter.Â
