Vulcans two-time No. 8 Eagles

KAILUA-KONA, Hawai`i—No. 8 nationally ranked Concordia came into Thursday's games with Hawai`i Hilo averaging nearly six runs a game with a .295 team batting average.

Those numbers are going to take a little dip after today.

UH Hilo scored 1-0 and 2-1 upset wins over the defending Pacific West Conference champions during morning and afternoon games at Kealakehe High School. The Vulcans improved to 5-3 in conference play and to 10-10 overall with the victories, while the Eagles dropped to 13-4 overall and to 7-3 in the PacWest.

It was the first time all year that Concordia has been swept in a doubleheader.

Valerie Alvarado pitched a two-hit shutout in the first game and Leah Gonzales didn't give up an earned run in the second as the Vulcans shut down the explosive Eagle bats.

Vevesi Liilii hit a solo home run in the opener and Skylar Thomas doubled twice in the afternoon game to pace the office.

In the first game, Liilii sent a no-doubter over the leftfield fence to lead off the bottom of the second inning. Kiarra Lincoln had singled in the first inning and Markie Okamoto did the same in the fourth, but otherwise Concordia ace Callie Nunes put outs in the scorebook.

The All-American would strike out ten and not walk a batter, but Liilii's bomb held up as the difference because Alvarado was so effective. The senior didn't give up a hit until the sixth inning, when Sarah Kretschmar looped a single into centerfield. McKensey Thorpe would follow with a bunt single.

That was Concordia's best chance, as a sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third with just one out. But Alvarado dug in and induced back-to-back ground outs to UHH third baseman Chloe Domingo to end the threat.

Alvarado would go on to quench the Eagles in order in the seventh to pick up her fifth win of the season (5-4), against the two-time Pacific West Conference Pitcher of the Year, who suffered her first loss of the season (6-1).

In the second game, the Vulcans gave up an unearned run in the first inning as the Eagles scored without the benefit of a hit.

But Gonzales worked in and out of jams after that. She didn't walk a batter, so there were no free base runners after the first inning.

In the third, Brinell Kaleikini was hit by a pitch to start the inning. She moved to second on a bunt and then scored on the first of Thomas' doubles—this one to the right-center gap. Domingo would follow with a single to chase home Thomas, who slid headfirst into home plate with what would end up being the winning run.

Gonzales put the Eagles down in order in the fourth and sixth, and survived two base hits in the fifth. In the seventh, she again worked around a lead-off single and struck out the final two batters of the game.

The senior righty improved to 5-3 with the win, scattering six hits and fanning six.

The two teams will square off again tomorrow, again at Kealakehe HS, with the first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m.
