Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

First Half Lead Evaporates as Vulcans Fall to Hawks, 2-1

HAYWARD, Calif.--The UH Hilo men's soccer team took a 1-0 lead into the halftime locker room but host Holy Names took over the match in the second half during a 2-1 win over the Vulcans on Sunday afternoon at Chabot College.

The loss in UH Hilo's first of four matches during a northern California road trip puts the Vulcans at 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the Pacific West Conference. It was the conference opener for Holy Names (1-0), who is now 3-3-1 overall.

UH Hilo threatened early and often in the Sunday matinee. They fired three shots that had to be saved by Hawks' keeper Rasmus Nielsen in the first 20 minutes before the Vulcans broke through in the 30th minute.

At 29:20, MarcAnthony Cabrera sent a shot toward the Hawks goal that was pushed back out, only to be gathered by Luca Lippert and deposited into the net (29:26). The Vulcans took that lead into the halftime break.

UH Hilo had six shots in the first half and Holy Names had seven, but the pace shifted dramatically in the second half. After the rest, Holy Names immediately sent a couple of shots that had to be saved by Michael Harre, and ultimately in the 66th minute they tied the match on a goal by Joel Rosales.

13 minutes later, with a number of shots inbetween, the Hawks took the lead on the game winner by Jehimy Arias. HNU's defensive wouldn't allow another potential game tying shot, holding on for the 2-1 victory.

Holy Names had 13 shots in the second half to just four for the Vulcans. For the match, HNU had 20 shots to UHH's 10. Nine different players had shots for the Vulcans, while Harre finished with five saves on the defensive side.

UH Hilo will travel to Fresno for their second match of the trip, taking on the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific under the lights at 7:30 pm.
