IRVINE, Calif.--UH Hilo's men's and women's soccer matches on Saturday at home versus Chaminade have been forfeited by the Silverswords because of their inability to field complete teams due to suspensions and injuries.
With no opportunity to reschedule the matches before the end of the NCAA Division II regular season, the Pacific West Conference office has ruled that both matches (men and women) will be ruled forfeits. Chaminade will be charged with forfeit losses in the conference standings, and Hawai`i Hilo will receive wins.
For UH Hilo's women, that makes them co-champions of the PacWest, tied with Point Loma with a 9-1 conference record. The Vulcans will receive the PacWest's automatic qualifier berth into the NCAA tournament, by virtue of their 1-0 overtime victory over the Sea Lions on October 27 in HIlo.
The Vulcans will now wait until Monday's NCAA selection show (1:00pm Hawaii Time on NCAA.com) to find out their postseason destination and opponent. It is UH HIlo's first-ever PacWest title and NCAA tournament appearance in women's soccer. They will carry a 12-3 overall mark into the tournament, which would begin next Thursday (Nov. 18) or Friday.
For the Vulcan men, they finish their season on a high note after yesterday's 3-0 upset of Hawaii Pacific. UHH finished the year with a 6-7-1 overall record and a 4-5-1 mark in conference play.
Both the men and women played Chaminade earlier this season on Oahu, with the UHH men gaining a 2-1 victory and the women topping the Silverswords, 3-0.
Saturday was slated to be Senior Day for both teams. The squads will still celebrate with a scrimmage and the traditional Hawaiian senior celebration after those scrimmages. Start times for the women will be 8:30 am and 9:30 am for the men.
