HILO, Hawai`i--After ten sets of volleyball iand nearly five hours of back-and-forth action, UH Hilo and Azusa Pacific split a pair of hard fought matches on Saturday at Vulcan Gymnasium.
Azusa Pacific won the morning match in five, and the Vulcans gained the split at night with a 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-13 win. UHH left the gym with a 16-6 overall record and 13-5 mark in the Pacific West Conference. The Cougars are now 17-9 on the year and 12-6 in conference play. With two matches to play, the Vulcans are in fourth place in the PacWest, three matches behind first-place Chaminade (16-3), two games behind Biola (15-3) and one match in the standings behind Concordia (14-4).
The Vulcans used 20 kills from
Bria Beale and 12 from
Samara Cruz.
Ashton Jessee had nine kills and nine block assists, and also had a solo block.
Tani Hoke had 22 digs to lead UHH in that category.
APU had four players with double figure kill numbers, led by Annaka Jorgenson (17) and Katarina Radisic (17). Bailey Hennington had an outstanding 33 digs.
The two teams played 10 sets on the day, and only one wasn't close---set number four tonight when the Cougars ran away at 25-15. But the entire day was filled with great play at the net and back row. In the nightcap, APU had 13 total blocks and the Vulcans had 12.5. APU had 108 digs and the Vulcans had 92.Â
In the deciding fifth set, no more than two points separated the teams. There were 11 ties in the game, with Beale putting down a ball to make it 11-11. It was tied again at 12-12 before Beale dropped another kill to make it 13-12. After a Cougar error gave UHH match point, the Cougars got a point back from Jorgenson (14-13) but the Vulcans closed out the match with a block to end the very long day.
363 fans were in attendance. There were a total of 33 ties in the match and 18 lead changes, including seven in the fifth set.
The Vulcans will wrap up the regular season next Friday (Chaminade) and Saturday (Hawaii Pacific) at Vulcan Gymnasium. Both matches start at 7 pm.
