Basketball standouts
Darren Williams and
Bree Olson are this week's winners of the UH Hilo Pepsi Athletes of the Week awards.
Bree Olson had a big weekend in helping the Vulcans to their first two wins of the season at Chaminade and earns the first UH HIlo Pepsi Athlete of the Week award for February. A 5-foot-11 forward, Olson totaled 16 points and 20 rebounds as the Vulcans swept the Silverswords on Oahu. The Tucson, Ariz. native had a career-high 12 rebounds in Sunday's game to go with ten points for her first double-double in a Vulcan uniform. Olson, a transfer from Pima CC (Ariz.) sat out last season with a knee injury.
Vulcan junior guard
Darren Williams was clutch down the stretch of UHH's 69-68 upset win of Chaminade on Sunday and earns the UH Hilo Pepsi Athlete of the Week award for February 1. The 5-foot-8 transfer from Chaffey College (Calif.) totaled 24 points in two games, had seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. But perhaps most important were his four free throws in the final two minutes of Sunday's win, and his dish to
Steven Hubbell for a three-pointer with 1:19 on the clock. Williams and the Vulcans defeated Chaminade for the first time in the last six tries, and they earned their first win at Chaminade since 2009.Â
Both teams will now get ready for another trip to Oahu for a twinbill at Hawaii Pacific on Saturday and Sunday.
