Vulcans Fight to Tie with 'Swords

HONOLULU, Hawai`i--UH Hilo snatched a tie from the jaws of defeat on Saturday afternoon against Chaminade, scoring with 2:30 left in regulation to draw a 2-2 tie with the Silverswords at St. Louis Field.

Nanea Wall fired a perfect shot over the outstretched arms of the Chaminade keeper to save what two minutes earlier looked like a home-team win. At 85:21, Chaminade's Randi Fontes scored her second goal of the day on a penalty kick to seemingly give her team the victory.

Per conference spring rules and coaches agreement, there was no overtime played. It was the first match of the spring season for the Vulcans, and the Silverswords are now 1-0-1.

This match, the first for the Vulcans in 15 months, had a lot of action early and late, and not a lot of offense in between.

Fontes scored one minute and six seconds into the contest, before the Vulcans were even settled. She rushed past the UHH defense on a breakaway and drove the ball into the net for a 1-0 'Swords lead.

UH Hilo's Christina Kanellou tied the match at 27:32 with a score, and that's how the much stood until Fontes' goal and Wall's answer. The sophomore from Konawaena gathered a loose ball about ten feet beyond the top of the box. Surrounded by two defenders, she circled one and the other fell down. She then fired a laser from about 30 feet out that found the net just under the crossbar with about a foot to spare.

The Vulcans finished with 11 shots, nine of them on goal. The Silverswords had eight shots, three of them on goal. Naomi Takata had seven saves for Chaminade, and UHH's Viviana Poli had two saves in her Vulcan debut. Offensively, Fontes had five shots and Wall had three.

UH HIlo will conclude their Oahu soccer weekend with a Sunday match against Hawaii Pacific. The Vulcans will take on the Sharks at 2 pm, also at St. Louis Field.
