HONOLULU, Hawai`i--For the Hawai`i Hilo men's soccer team, "One" was surely the lonliest number on Saturday afternoon against Chaminade.
The Vulcans scored just outside the first minute of play for their one goal, gave up one goal and picked up their first tie during a 1-1 game to move to 1-1-1 on the season.
UH Hilo will wrap up their four-match spring season tomorrow against Hawaii Pacific, with a 11 am start time. Like today's match, Sunday's encounter will also be at St. Louis Field.
Vulcan local
John Grover (Waiakea HS) scored his second goal of the season just a minute and a half into the match. Grover handled a corner kick from
Tom Vorkastner and dropped it into the Silversword goal to put the Vulcans up quickly, 1-0.
But they wouldn't get past Chaminade goalkeeper Clay Ah Soon the rest of the day. UHH had 13 shots on the day, but only two more on goal after Grover's score.
Meanwhile, the worst possible scenario unfolded for the Vulcans late in the contest. After a keeper save, he tried to clear the ball but accidentally knocked it into the upper top shelf of the net. It goes down as an "own goal" and it tied the contest at 1-1 at 72:34.
The Vulcans had two more shots in the contest, by Vorkastner and Kalei Tolentino-Perry, who both had three shots on the afternoon, but both sailed wide.
Chaminade, who fell to the Vulcans 4-1 last month, ends their spring season with a 0-3-1 mark. Sunday's opponent Hawaii Pacific is currently unbeaten at 3-0 and clinched the Hawaii Pod today with UHH's tie.
