Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Vulcans Even Steven (Again) with 'Swords

HONOLULU, Hawai`i--In this very short spring season for the Hawai`i island women's soccer teams, one thing has become fairly certain.

The three Hawai`i teams from the Pacific West Conference are pretty evenly matched.

For the third time in three tries, the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans ended 90 minutes of play tied with their opponent. Today at St. Louis Field, it was Chaminade (again), 1-1. When the two teams met last month, same thing, different score at 2-2. That makes the Vulcans 0-0-3 heading into their final match of the spring on Sunday against Hawaii Pacific, whome (you guessed it) they also tied the first time they met.

Chaminade finishes their schedule at 1-0-3. They also split matches this year with the Sharks, tying one and winning (2-1).

Another familiar theme in February and March has been the scoring of Chaminade's Randi Fontes. She scored her fifth goal of the season in the 14th minute of this one, taking a pass from Tehani Smith and lobbing it over the top of Vulcan keeper Viviana Poli, who came out of the net. Fontes scored in every match this spring for the Silverswords, including twice the first time that they played the Vulcans.

That 1-0 lead held until UHH's Daelenn Tokunaga, who like Fontes transferred from the University of Hawaii, took a pass from Megan Donovan and pushed it home from 15 at the 32:02 mark. It was Tokunaga's first goal as a Vulcan.

And you know the rest of the story. No one scored the rest of the match, although the Vulcans sent eight shots towards the net in the second half after having only two in the first half. UHH's Poli was busy, especially in the first half, totaling seven saves. Four of those saves came against Fontes, who had seven total shots.

UHH will try and break the tie logjam on Sunday, taking on Hawaii Pacific at 2 pm, again at St. Louis Field.
