Vulcans Take Another Step to Postseason

HONOLULU, Hawai`i--With just one game to go, the UH Hilo men's basketball team took one more step towards postseason play.

The Vulcans won their eighth straight game to improve to 10-1 on the season with a 78-62 victory over Chaminade on Friday night at McCabe Gymnasium. Their final game of the regular season is Saturday at McCabe, with a 3 pm tip-off.

UH Hilo outscored the Silverswords 40-28 in the second half to pull away from their hosts. Guard Darren Williams led the visitors with 21 points, hitting 5-of-8 from behind the arch. Chaminade fell to 4-7 on the year.

UH Hilo, who is ranked seventh in this week's NCAA west region poll (top six qualify), will need to win on Saturday to keep their hopes alive.

Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones had 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots, and Jordan Graves added to the balanced attack with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Silverswords jumped out to a 8-1 lead in the first two and a half minutes, but Graves scored seven of UHH's next nine points to pull back to within a basket (12-10). The teams then traded baskets until UHH took a 38-34 lead into the locker room at the break. Graves had 12 points, missing only two shots and Williams had 11 with three treys.

Chaminade had a 49-48 lead at 13:10 after a Roman Young three-pointer, but the Vulcans promptly went on a 9-2 run and would never trail again. They would add to their lead later in the game with a combination of timely baskets and key defensive stops.

The Vulcans had 40 rebounds to Chaminade's 29. Sasa Vuksanovic had nine of those boards to go with his 10 points. Isaac Amaral-Artharee and Young led the 'Swords with 11 points each.
