Hole Too Much To Dig Out Of For Vulcans

AZUSA, Calif.--UH Hilo spotted Academy of Art eight runs in the first two innings, ultimately too big of a hole to climb out of during an 8-5 loss to the Urban Knights in Thursday's PacWest AQ Pod Series at Cougar Field.

The Vulcans will continue round robin play on Friday with a noon contest against host Azusa Pacific, followed by another 4 pm game against ART. The Vulcans are now 13-13 on the season and 0-1 in the Pod Series, while Academy of Art (who lost 14-2 to APU earlier in the day) improved to 16-18 on the season and to 1-1 in the Pod Series.

Academy of Art jumped on the Vulcans early in this one, defining that the Vulcans play comeback the rest of the day.

The Urban Knights had nearly identical first and second innings. In each, they scored four times on four hits, and also used a Vulcan error to keep the rallies going. Down 8-0, UH Hilo didn't get its first run until the fifth inning.

In the fifth, singles by Bradyn Yoshida and Casey Yamauchi set the table for the first run to score on a fielder's choice. Kobie Russell then launched a two-run shot over the right field fence to make the score 8-3.

UHH would add another run in the sixth when John Bicos tripled and scored on Mason Campbell's ground ball. Yamauchi and Trey Yukumoto singled with one out in the ninth and Russell brought home Yamauchi with a sacrifice fly, but that would be the end of the Vulcan scoring.

ART's Colin Carriger pitched the final two innings to supplement the starting work of winning pitcher Jayson Summers (7 IP/8 hits/4 earned runs).

Brandyn Lee-Lehano was the Vulcan starting pitcher who was roughed up early, but to his credit and stayed in the game to eat up innings and kept the Knights off the board for four innings. Jonathan Buhl pitched two scoreless relief innings and allowed just one hit for UHH.

Yamauchi had three hits for the Vulcans, and Chris Aubort and Yukumoto had two each. The Vulcans had 11 total hits to ART's 10, but UHH left nine runners on base to Academy of Art's three.

The winner of the PacWest AQ Pod Series receives the conference's automatic berth into next week's NCAA West Region tournament.
