IRVINE, Calif.--Paige Austin was nails in the pitching circle and her Biola teammates gave her plenty of offense to roll to a 9-0 mercy rule win over Hawaii Hilo in the winner's bracket of the NCAA Division II West Region Softball Championships.
Biola, unbeaten in the tournament, moves on to Saturday's championship round with a 21-13 overall record. The Vulcans will now play in a loser's out game at 5 pm against the winner of the next game between host Concordia and Central Washington.
Austin gave the Vulcans troubles from the early stages of the contest.
Kiarra Lincoln had a hit in the first inning,
Darian Obara had one in the fourth and
Kamalei Labasan added one in the fifth, but the Vulcans couldn't piece anything else on the either side of those hits. Austin picked up her 11 win, allowing just the three hits, three walks and she fanned six.
Austin's offense roughed up four Vulcan pitchers for the nine runs on 12 hits, supplemented by six walks, three hit batters and four wild pitches. Four different Biola hitters had two hits each.
