HONOLULU, O'AHU-- The UH Hilo men's soccer team made their first game of the 2021 season one to remember. Sophomore David Mayser scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime to give UH Hilo the 2-1 victory over Chaminade. 
 
The Vulcans will begin the season 1-0, while the Silverswords will drop 1-1. UHH will continue their stretch against Hawai'i Pacific Saturday, Sept 18 at 12 p.m. HST.
 
The Vulcans showcased their grit in their thrilling season debut. Chaminade scored early in the first half, but the Red and Black were unphased, refusing to let up on the gas. Even though the scoreboard showed them trailing Chaminade 1-0 in the first half, the Vulcans out shot the Silverswords 11-6, five of which were on goal to Chaminade's four. 
 
After half-time the Vulcans were able to crack through Chaminade's defense scoring off of a penalty kick by Mayser. With the score tied 1-1, the Vulcans battled on the field forcing the match to go into overtime. 
 
At the end of regulation, UH Hilo had 15 shots to Chaminade's 12, seven of which were on goal to the Silverswords four. Chaminade's goalkeepers had to work hard in the goal, fighting off the Vulcan offense with six combined saves. 
 
In the 93rd minute, Mayser seized another opportunity. He broke through the Silverswords defense, quickly dribbling to the top of the box where he fired in a shot that made it through to the lower right shelf. 
 
Third-year veteran, Michael Harre limited damage in the goal with three saves. Luca Lippert had four shots and Tommy Seaver, Brady O'Neill, Mayser, and Tom Vorkastner had two apiece.
