HILO, Hawai'i-- The men's soccer team took on No. 5 Azusa Pacific in their first PacWest Conference matchup of the season. APU ended up with a 1-0 win over UHH, securing their first conference win.
Azusa Pacific improves their record 5-1-1 (1-0 in conference) while UH Hilo falls 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference.
The Vulcans didn't receive the outcome they were looking for, but have been competing well against teams that are recognized as Top 25 in the nation by the United Soccer Coaches Association. UH Hilo only lost by one goal in two matches against nationally ranked competitors. They
lost in overtime to No. 16 Seattle Pacific and today by just one goal to No. 5 Azusa Pacific.
The Cougars scored their goal in the 29
th minute of the first half. Overall, the Cougars out-shot the Vulcans 12-4, but the Vulcans out-shot the Cougars in the second half 4-3. Four separate Vulcans contributed shots including
Gabriel Gallardo,
Rafail Makrodimitris,
Kealaula Keliikoa, and
Israel Kalili.
UHH goalkeeper,
Michael Harre had three saves out of four shots on goal.
The men's soccer team plays next on the road against Holy Names. The match is set for Sunday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. PT in Oakland, Calif.
