ARCATA, Calif.-
-Host Humboldt State broke a 1-1 tie in the 74th minute and then held on to defeat visiting Hawai`i Hilo 2-1 in a non-conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon in front of 205 fans at College Creek Field.

HSU's Kendal Spencer knocked in the game-winner to give the Lumberjacks their first win of the young season (1-0-1), while the Vulcans fell to 0-2 after dropping their second one-goal match.

The Vulcans will wrap up their three-match road trip on Tuesday with a match at San Francisco State (noon PT) at Cox Stadium.

The Lumberjacks of the CCAA got on the board first with a goal just six minutes into the match. Clara Lenihan took a pass from Poppy Cartledge and flicked a shot in past Vulcan goalkeeper Viviana Poli at 5:26 to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

But the Vulcans struck back at 19:28 when UH Manoa transfer Daelenn Tokunaga worked herself clear for a shot that zipped past HSU keeper Alexis Aguilar. That 1-1 score stayed on the scoreboard into the halftime break.

Both teams had opportunities in the second half before Spencer knocked in what would turn out to be the game winner. Poli had to save two more Lumberjack shots before it was all over, while the Vulcans also sent two more shots at Aguilar that were saved, one by Brende Yoshizumi and one by Piper Collado.

The Vulcans had ten shots in the match, four of them on goal. Humboldt State had nine total shots, six of them on goal. The Vulcans had six corner kicks to HSU's two.
