SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--Vulcan transfer
Filippa Graneld saved her new team from overtime with a goal in the 88th minute to push UH Hilo to a 1-0 non-conference women's soccer victory over host San Francisco State on Tuesday afternoon at Cox Stadium.
Graneld, a transfer from Pac-12 Colorado, scored with two minutes and two seconds left before overtime would have ensued. She gathered in a long pass on the left side of the field at the top of the box, faked one way to send her defender past her, and launched a shot from the left side to the lower right corner of the net. The ball shot past Gator goalkeeper Iliana Gallegos for the match winner to send the Vulcans into celebration.
The Vulcans wrapped up their three-match road trip with their first victory of the year to improve to 1-2. The Gators dropped to 0-3, having also lost non-conference matches to Point Loma (1-0) and Azusa Pacific (4-0).
Graneld's shot essentially ended a match that was evenly played. The Vulcans had 14 shots (four of them on goal) and San Francisco State had 15 (six on goal).
UHH keeper
Viviana Poli recorded her first shutout in a Vulcan uniform, tallying six saves. Graneld had five shots for the Vulcans, Daelenn Takunaga had four, as did Christiana Kanellou.
"We played better today and it was nice for the team to get rewarded with a win," said Vulcan head coach
Gene Okamura. "We have some things to build on when we return home to get ready for HPU and Chaminade."
The Vulcans now return home and will next play a pair of non-conference matches against PacWest opponents Hawaii Pacific (Sept. 12) and Chaminade (Sept. 16).
