Pepsi Athletes of the Week: Bree Olson and Jamie Strong

HILO, Hawai'i– The women's and men's basketball teams faced Academy of Art and Dominican this past week and both teams picked up two more wins to add to their growing winning streaks.

Women's basketball is riding a five-game winning streak, 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the PacWest Conference and the men's basketball team extended their winning streak to six games, 10-4 overall and 6-1 in the PacWest.

This week's Pepsi Athletes of the Week are Bree Olson (Tucson, Ariz. / Pusch Ridge Christian Academy / Pima CC) and Jamie Strong (Glendora, Calif. / Glendora HS / Holy Names Univ. / Cal Poly Pomona/). Olson and Strong didn't average the most playing time this week, but made the time they were in count. Both players made an immediate impact, helping their teams knock down two more wins.

Bree Olson (Tucson, Ariz. / Pusch Ridge Christian Academy / Pima CC)
Olson made her first debut of the 2021-22 season Thursday, Jan. 13 against Academy of Art. Olson was battling an injury for the first part of the season and Thursday night was her first night dressing out. Olson scored seven points against the Urban Knights and contributed an assist in the Vulcans' 66-58 win.

She was also effective on defense, taking five balls off the glass and grabbing one steal.

Olson was a spark plug in the Vulcans' offensive on Monday night against the Penguins. She scored six of UHH's 13 points in the first quarter and ended the night with a total of 11 points in the Red and Blacks' 77-63 win.

Olson also led the team defensively, grabbing eight boards.

Jamie Strong (Glendora, Calif. / Glendora HS / Holy Names Univ. / Cal Poly Pomona/)
Strong scored 12 points and dished out three assists in the Vulcans' 75-72 victory over ART U on Thursday, Jan. 13.

Strong was key on defense where he collected four boards and snagged a steal.

Strong's steal came in the first half when UHH was trailing the Urban Knights by three points. Strong's steal led to a Vulcan basket and was a momentum shifter that led UH Hilo to take the lead for the first time of the night.

Strong tallied nine points against DU. He came off the bench and downed two treys in UH Hilo's 86-78 victory. He also tabbed one block and one rebound in the Red and Black's great team win.
