Men's Soccer Drops 2-0 Affair to Biola

Hawai‘i Hilo was pressured all-night long, having been outshot, 33-4.

La MIRADA, California – The Hawai'i Hilo men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 affair with Biola Saturday evening in Pacific West Conference play at Al Barbour Field.

The Eagles kept the pressure on all night as they outshot the Vulcans, 33-4, with a 16-3 shots-on-goal advantage.

Fresh off posting the Vulcans' lone shutout of the season, Christian Souza (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Damien Memorial School) tallied a career-high 12 saves, the second-most made in a single game by a PacWest goalkeeper this season. It was Souza's seventh start of the year as he fell to a 3-2-2 record.

By the time Biola got on the scoreboard in the 31st minute, it was already the Eagles' eighth shot as the Vulcans had yet to take a single one.

Moose Bonat shot the ball from the right corner of the penalty area and ricocheted it off Dylan Memory as Kristian Colaci cleaned up the ping-pong action with the header for the score.

Moritz Riegel added another score for Biola in the 49th minute from about 20 yards out.

What's Next

Hawai'i Hilo dropped to 4-5-4 overall, 3-2-2 PacWest while Biola improved to 4-0-3 in the PacWest (5-3-6 overall).

The Vulcans continue on in southern California with a matchup against Point Loma Nazarene (5-5-3, 2-2-1 PacWest) Monday, Oct. 24 in San Diego.

The Eagles will return home to host Chaminade on Monday.

Postseason Possibilities

The Pacific Conference does not have a postseason tournament and its champion is dependent on the final results of the regular season.

Currently, Hawai'i Hilo is third in the standings at 11 points behind Biola (4-0-3) and Dominican (5-0-1), who both have 15 points.

The PacWest Champion will receive an automatic spot in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championships Super-Region IV (West/South Central) tournament consisting of 10 teams. Champions from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Lone Star Conference (LSC) and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) will also receive automatic bids, leaving five at-large bids open.

No PacWest team was included in the initial NCAA Division II Super-Region IV Rankings released earlier this week.
